To begin the login process on your computer, a user establishes a connection to the machine. The kernel is loaded into Random Access Memory (RAM) by the boot loader. Once the connection is made and the session is established in Unix, you see the login prompt
At this point you type in your user name followed by pressing the Enter key
Then you will see the password prompt, so you type in your password followed by the Enter key.
Once you successfully log into the system, you will see the command prompt or shell prompt. Funny…that dollar sign $ - is there waiting for me to type in a command
When you enter whatever command you decide on - the task you wish to accomplish begins…
So here’s how Unix would compare to your everyday…
You wake up in the morning and as my Mom used to say: you get your bearings together.
In other words…you log in and enter your password.
You get out of bed, grab your coffee. In other words, you have successfully entered the shell.
You decide on what task you wish to accomplish and you command it to happen…
Done!
